Approximately 4.9 % of the U.S population experience depression. Diagnosis is based on the following list of symptoms:
  1. Depressed mood for a majority of the day
  2. Markedly decreased interest or pleasure in all or almost all activities
  3. Significant unintended changes in weight or appetite
  4. Insomnia or hypersomnia
  5. Psychomotor agitations or retardation
  6. Fatigue or loss of energy, and feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt.
  7. Diminished ability to think or concentrate
  8. Recurrent thoughts of death, suicide or attempted suicide
At least 5 of the above symptoms must be present nearly everyday for a two week period for a person to be diagnosed with depression.

Treatments:
Western medical doctors prescribe drugs like Zoloft , Prozac, and Tricyclic anti depressants to support the theory that depression is due to a deficiency of monoamines, such as serotonin and nor epinephrine.  These drugs however can cause many side effects including suicidal tendencies, psychotic episodes and loss of libido.
Psychotherapy is often indicated along with drug therapy.

Alternative to Drugs.
Acupuncture, herbal medicine and nutritional supplements have been used successfully in reversing depression. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, depression can be due to a deficiency of energy flow and blood flow in the meridians as manifestedin cases such as fatigue, weight loss and post partum depression.  Anxiety, irritability and insomnia are due to excess heat in the liver channel. Acupuncture points are selected for you based on the pattern you portray  during our intake interview and physical examination.

Treatment: Acupuncture treatments given one or twice a week for about 3 months combined with recommendations for herbal medicine and vitamins.
Our own research also give evidence that systemic overgrowth of yeast (candidiasis) worsen depression or can lead to depression.  If you are positive for candida overgrowth you will be advised to follow a diet change and to take a sequence of anti fungals. This is based on the research done by S. Colet Lahoz and published in her book “ Conquering Yeast Infections The Non Drug Solution”.( available at the clinic $ 14.95)

Cost: The first visit which include the evaluation and your first treatment is $90.00. Subsequent visits are $70.00 Supplements are extra and all together may cost approximately $ 500.00 depending on your particular situation.
